La fine è il mio inizio - The end is my beginning

(English follows)

Così è per me.

The end is my beginning is a biographical book (and later a movie) written by Tiziano Terzani. It's a kind of interview about his life that he does to his son.
T. Terzani knows that he will not survive because of his cancer, but he has now found his inner peace. So he is not afraid of death.
Well this is not my case because I'm not going to die 😅 but I did have an end too: the end of the therapy, the end of my previous life and this is my new beginning.
I'm not sure if I have also reached the peace of mind but for sure I can say that I see things with a different awareness and that I'm even more grateful for everything that surrounds me.

This is my reborn and I swear you it's not an euphemism. Everything I do I feel like if it's for the first time. It's so beautiful to swim, food is so tasty, a hug is so warm.
I think about my little nephew's face when he sees an ant for the first time...he is so surprised and happy. Everything is a discover to him, everything is special.

I felt like a kid during all the time of the therapy too. I felt so sensible and vulnerable. I could cry for everything, a simple headache for instance. It was impossible to contain emotions, they were bared...I felt bared...starting from my hairless head and body.

The symbol of my reborn is my hair. It's growing slowly everywhere on my body and it's so soft on my head, like babies. Hair is my revenge against Mr. Hodgkin 😂😂.

I want to thank YOU who are reading this post. I want to thank all the people who have been and are close to me.
I'm grateful to my family, old friends, rediscovered friends, new friends, linph-friends, work colleagues, acquaintances. Each message/call/card, each gesture, each thought/pray was needed and much appreciated.

For those couple of people who I thought were close to me but got distant or indifferent instead, well I can only remind them that cancer is NOT contagious. Love it is.

E' finita - It's done

(English follows)

L'8 agosto ho fatto la PET. E' negativa.

Io ero particolarmente nervosa.

On the 8th of August I had PET. It's negative. It means that the cancer disappeared totally.

The morning that I had PET I was extremely nervous. PET is nuclear medicine, it stands for Positron Emission Tomography. It's a body scan. First they inject sugar in your veins so your body will become transparent under the scan machine. You need to wait 1 hour before you go under the machine. Indeed the body needs to assimilate the sugar. During that time they put you in a dark room and you just sit on a comfortable armchair...and wait. You can't eat, your stomach needs to be empty since the previous night. You can't neither read nor watch your mobile, you are not allowed to speak, but not even to sleep. Your body just needs to be in a state of rest. I was extremely nervous. In that hour I could only pray.

Once your are under the machine it takes around 20 minutes to do the scan.
You are not allowed to move and you have just to listen the nurse's instructions. She speaks to you through a microphone from another room. Indeed during the scan and for the following 3 hours you are not allowed to touch or be very close to people because you are radioactive.

One of the positive things of doing the therapy in Switzerland is the efficiency.
Indeed in the same afternoon I already got the PET result and had the meeting with my oncologist. I went there with my mum and with Gianni. The doctor was a bit late at the appointment. I was extremely nervous. When she arrived and she asked me as always "how are you?" I replied: "please I can't wait tell me the result". The doctor said: "I'm not able to create suspense...IT'S NEGATIVE". Silence followed. She asked: "are you happy?": I cried, followed by my mum and then my brother.

La lotta continua - Keeping fighting

(English follows below pictures)

Nonostante tutto mi godo l'arrivo dell'estate 😎.

Compleanno in Italia 😍

English:

I promise I will write more often. There are still so many things that I want to write about my relation with cancer, with Mr. Hodgkin.

Today I feel quite good as I had my last chemo already 2 weeks ago. This week was tough though. I had fever and I was particularly tired with low blood values.
It's funny because during my weekly controls in between chemotherapies my oncologist always asks me as first thing HOW ARE YOU? before to show me the blood results. I automatically answer FINE THANKS and surprised she says REALLY? Then she shows me my hemoglobin values...and I convince myself that I don't want to stay most of the time on the sofa because I'm lazy but because obviously I don't have energy. Once it happened that when the doctor asked me How are you I started to cry instead, I was saying that I was extremely tired, physically and mentally. In fact I already told you in a previous post  that I'm really moody: when I don't feel well I'm depressed and I never see an end, but when I feel just a bit better I completely remove the bad days, I look forward to the end of the therapy and I start to plan my life after-therapy.

Tomorrow, Monday 12 June I have chemo n. 10. I still can't believe it, 3 MORE CHEMOS TO GO!!! I'm flipping out 👅💥.
However, the oncologist told me not to be already too excited. She warned me that I will continue to feel the side effects for a while after the therapy. I will continue to be tired, my immune system will still be extremely weak. I will have to continue to take antibiotics and the pill to prevent herpes for 6 more months. When I asked if I can take an exotic travel she said better next year as I can't take sun or I shouldn't have street food for example. And if I decide to start to work again immediately after the therapy it should be part-time.

I posted few pictures of the past days and weeks. I still enjoy the arrival of summer 😎.

Chemio n.7 - Chemo n.7

(English follows below pictures)

Odio in particolare i luoghi chiusi e affollati.

Chemio n.7 - Chemo n.7

Chemio n.6 - Chemo n.6
(18/04/2017)

(English)

I didn't post for more than two weeks and it's nice to receive messages from you asking if everything is OK because I didn't write for a while.

It's hard for me to find concentration to write because either there are days when I feel really bad and I'm not able to watch the screen or there are good days when I prefer to go outside and enjoy the real world. However I'm happy when I can write: I think it's important to express my feelings and also to open eyes to the readers who don't know how a cancer-patient can feel.

Yesterday 2 May I had my seventh chemo.  I'm more than halfway done 😆, 5 more chemos to go 💪.

I had the previous chemo on 18 April and in between therapies I was able to go to Italy to my parents' home and see the rest of my family (even if my mum stays always with me, either I stay in Switzerland or in Italy 💗).
The day of the chemo I still feel good so for me it's not so hard to travel. Tiredness and strong side effects start after few days and last around one week.

So I came back to Lucerne last Friday with Gianni and my mum when I was starting to feel good again. On the way back I accepted to stop in Milan and participate to a marketing event at Sheraton Hotel where Gianni was invited to. The seminar was interesting but for me it was nice because on that day I felt like a normal person who does normal things. However in certain moments I was dizzy, for example my view was grey or my arms were trembling when I was taking food at the lunch buffet. I miss normal life but I'm afraid to do normal things. Especially when I'm in closed crowded places. I feel immediately the need of fresh air and I would like to throw away my wig.

Even when I have good days and I can do normal things like going out and meet people after few hours I really need to go back home and sleep or just rest. It's a physical need and my body asks for that.

I wanted to give all these details because it happened that I was asked how I spend my days. It was asked in a way like if I'm always bored, if I'm just a lazy woman who watches series all time and takes advantage of the sickness allowance.
Well I can confirm that I watch less TV than a healthy person who works 100%.
It's better that I don't give all the details about chemo's side effects because you would feel disgusted. However I want to say that there are days when I'm not able to leave my bed not even to eat or to go to the toilet because of pain or extremely low blood pressure.
Try to think when you are really weak because you got a very bad flu...well those are my best days.
In addition there is the psychological pain.

I can assure that you wouldn't like to try to be a cancer patient not even for one day, so please if you ever will unfortunately have a friend or relative with cancer I suggest you to LISTEN him/her, to READ and get information about the disease, the chemotherapy and the side effects. It will be much appreciated and you will avoid to do silly questions but maybe be helpful and more understanding.

HO DIMENTICATO IL CAPPELLINO - I FORGOT THE CAP

(English follows)

Today I want to tell you what happened on Wednesday.

I was at home with Sara. Before dinner we went downstairs to the laundry to use the wash machine. After dinner I told Sara that I would have gone alone to take the laundry. Normally at home if I'm not cold my head is free. When I opened the door to go to the basement I forgot to cover my head, I felt a bit cold but I was lazy to go back, I would have needed just 5 minutes and as it was late I wouldn't have met anybody in the stairs.

However when I left the laundry I met a neighbor at the end of the corridor. I said HI but she didn't recognize me. When I got closer she helped to open the door as my hands were busy. She looked at my head and very surprised she asked me "WARUM? - WHY?"
I haven't lost completely my hair and I had make-up, maybe she didn't notice that I'm sick but she was just curious about my new drastic hair cut. Very spontaneously I just answered: "I'm making a therapy and I'm losing my hair, ICH HABE KREBS - I have cancer". She felt very sorry and immediately my eyes got wet, I would have liked to say that it's nothing too bad, it's curable and I'm fine, but the only thing I said was: "it's my fault I forgot to wear a cap". She felt shame for her question and didn't let me talk anymore, we said bye.

Once at home I started to cry like a crazy. I never cried like that before. Sometimes I cry because I'm emotional, or for the stress or for the pain, but never too much. However that night was a tragedy. I cried so much that I was afraid to get a panic attack. I thought that I don't feel shame of this disease and that there is nothing bad to tell people that I'm doing chemotherapy. But that night I felt shame. I felt guilty because I forgot to wear a cap, like if I went naked to the laundry.

You see that I'm always smiling in the pictures, but in those pictures I feel well, I have make-up and my head is covered. In reality I'm always pallid, with bags under the eyes, sometimes with acne, two scars on my neck (memories from the last 2 operations which I had in the last months), thin hair and few kilos less, always tired.

It seems that I'm always positive, but I'm going through really difficult moments. That night I cried so much asking myself why this should happen to me? What have I done? I'm not a bad person, I don't smoke, I eat healthy, I do sport..I was not able to find a sense. I cried because I'm mad that I can't make plans for the next months as the only thing I can do is to take care of myself. I have to pay attention to everything, even when I feel well anything can be dangerous, like hugging a friend, going to the supermarket or eating at a restaurant, there is always the risk to take an infection and to be recovered at the hospital in isolation. I cried because I'm so weak that I can't go to work and I feel I'm useless, I can't go to the gym because is too crowded, I'm not able to run and it's already enough when I can take a small walk. I cried because I'm sad for my family who is sad for me and they don't deserve this pain. I cried because I'm disappointed with the doctors in Lucerne and with the health insurance who doesn't want to pay for my therapy in Italy because they think that making the therapy in your own country with your family is not necessary.

I should admit that crying so much was a good surge though and an occasion for reflection. I look forward to be healthy again and I'm sure that I will set other priorities in my life and I will be able to better recognize who really loves me.

Anyway the day after my neighbor left this card behind my door:

I think I couldn't get better wishes 😊😃.
