E' finita - It's done

L'8 agosto ho fatto la PET. E' negativa. Vuol dire che il cancro è sparito completamente.

La mattina della PET ero particolarmente nervosa. La PET è una tecnica diagnostica medica di medicina nucleare, sta per Positron Emission Tomography. E' uno scan del corpo. Inizialmente t'iniettano una soluzione di zucchero nelle vene così che il tuo corpo sarà più trasparente sotto il macchinario. Da quando ti fanno l'iniezione a quando vai sotto il macchinario devi attendere circa un'ora. Infatti nel frattempo il corpo deve assimilare lo zucchero. In quell'ora ti fanno accomodare in una stanza oscura e sdraiare su una comoda poltrona...e aspettare. Non puoi mangiare, devi essere a digiuno dalla sera prima. Non puoi neanche leggere o guardare il telefono, non puoi parlare ma neanche dormire. Il corpo deve essere totalmente rilassato e non si deve sforzare. Ero particolarmente nervosa, stressata, l'unica cosa che potevo fare durante quell'ora era pregare.

Una volta che sei sotto lo scan devi rimanerci una ventina di minuti. Non ti è permesso muoverti e devi ascoltare solo le istruzioni dell'infermiera. Ti parla attraverso un microfono da un'altra stanza. Infatti durante lo scan e nelle ore successive non puoi toccare o stare vicino alle persone perchè sei radioattiva.

Uno dei lati positivi di fare le cure in Svizzera è l'efficienza. Infatti lo stesso pomeriggio avevo già il risultato della PET e l'appuntamento con l'oncologa. Ero lì con mia mamma e con Gianni. La dottoressa era un po' in ritardo. Io ero particolarmente nervosa. Quando arrivò e mi chiese come sempre "Come stai?" le dissi "per favore mi dica subito il risultato". La dottoressa disse: "...non mi riesce creare suspense...E' NEGATIVA". Silenzio nella stanza. Mi chiese: "sei felice?". Piansi, seguita da mia mamma e da mio fratello.




On the 8th of August I had PET. It's negative. It means that the cancer disappeared totally.

The morning that I had PET I was extremely nervous. PET is nuclear medicine, it stands for Positron Emission Tomography. It's a body scan. First they inject sugar in your veins so your body will become transparent under the scan machine. You need to wait 1 hour before you go under the machine. Indeed the body needs to assimilate the sugar. During that time they put you in a dark room and you just sit on a comfortable armchair...and wait. You can't eat, your stomach needs to be empty since the previous night. You can't neither read nor watch your mobile, you are not allowed to speak, but not even to sleep. Your body just needs to be in a state of rest. I was extremely nervous. In that hour I could only pray.

Once your are under the machine it takes around 20 minutes to do the scan.
You are not allowed to move and you have just to listen the nurse's instructions. She speaks to you through a microphone from another room. Indeed during the scan and for the following 3 hours you are not allowed to touch or be very close to people because you are radioactive.

One of the positive things of doing the therapy in Switzerland is the efficiency.
Indeed in the same afternoon I already got the PET result and had the meeting with my oncologist. I went there with my mum and with Gianni. The doctor was a bit late at the appointment. I was extremely nervous. When she arrived and she asked me as always "how are you?" I replied: "please I can't wait tell me the result". The doctor said: "I'm not able to create suspense...IT'S NEGATIVE". Silence followed. She asked: "are you happy?": I cried, followed by my mum and then my brother.
